The Herons Wing

Chapter One

I sat completely still next to the edge of the water.
The great bird lifted its head towards the sky, its immaculate feathers glistening softly in the summer heat. It dipped its head slowly into the water, and produced with it a fish like a block of pure silver. In one fluid movement the fish had dissapeared, and the great heron seemed momentarily satisifed. For the moment it did not seem aware of my presence, or else it did not much care. It stretched its great neck towards the sky and opened its wings, casting a blinding flash of sunlight from its slender frame. The water made a circle around the heron

Grey DawnThe streets glisten in the mornings, swelling and humming with the roar of life, springing to action in the gray mists. Watch it, stand still in the darkness and let it rise, let it rise up around you, slowly at first but gaining; roaring until the streets are full. Herons Wing Chapter FourChapter Four:
Every day i rose before dawn to make breakfast, and every day when the first rose of sunlight fell across the kitchen I wathced my mother limp into the room, hanging her head like a wounded bird. I could feel the pain radiating slowly out of her skin, seeping into my heart and making my head heavy on my neck. So much life had been beaten from behind her eyes, dried out by the summer heat and killed off by the winter chills. There were no room for words at our table, words fell flat against the floor and stank of rotted dreams. I thought it was 'If a body catch a body.' Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around-nobody big, I mean- except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff- I mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really like to be. I know its crazy.

Have you ever had a dream, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?
